About the history
For more than 600 years, Kriebstein Castle has been enthroned on a rock above the romantic Zschopau Valley. Its striking appearance and location earned it the reputation as the most beautiful knight’s castle in Saxony.
The castle dates back to 1384 when Dietrich von Beerwalde began building a representative noble castle here. The alterations and extensions carried out by the state master builder Arnold of Westphalia from 1471 onwards had a formative influence. He completed Kriebstein Castle and essentially gave it its present appearance.
The centerpiece is the large, seven-story residential tower with its distinctive roof with six oriel towers and the high ridge turret. It is surrounded by the chapel wing, the gatehouse, the southern annexes, the service wing and the circular wall.
Until 1945, the castle was the seat of various noble families, most recently the von Arnim family. Since 1949 it has been a state museum. Today, Kriebstein Castle belongs to the Staatliche Schlösser, Burgen und Gärten Sachsen gGmbh.
